Heritage Park is operated by the Fort McMurray Historical Society, a charitable, non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to maintain and cherish our city’s unique heritage. Funded by grants and donations, our goal at Heritage Park is to educate the public while providing a secure location for Fort McMurray and region's treasured artifacts, archives, and photographs. Thank you to our wonderful sponsors and community volunteers. It is through your community spirit and generosity that Heritage Park continues to grow and improve.
Our museum site is a 6.6 acre area containing seventeen historic buildings, two railway cars, a collection of large artifacts, and the Heritage Park Community Historical Resource Centre.
The historic buildings date from the 1900s to the late 1940s, providing visitors with a glimpse of Fort McMurray as it was in the early years. Some of the buildings are set up to provide visitors with an idea of how specific locations such as the first school room or a trapper's cabin might have looked. Other buildings contain more traditional museum displays on the first bush pilots, the fishing industry, trapping, the fur trade, the salt plants, logging, the railway, the telephone system, the ice harvest, and the busy river transportation.
Our newest building, opened in August of 2003, is the former home of Walter and Gladys Hill, and contains eight display areas showcasing artifacts from 1934 to 1970s.
We also feature exhibits showcasing community groups and organizations as well as traveling exhibits.

We are pleased to announce that we have achieved Recognized Museum Status. We are one of the museums in the province to receive the Recognized Museum designation from Alberta Museums Association. We have earned this designation after participating in the Museum Affirmation Program, a new initiative designed to strengthen the Associations accountability toward the public funds it distributes through grants and programming to the province’s museums.
