Fort McMurray Marine Park will be located along the Clearwater River in the Fort McMurray lower town site. The four acre site is the original location of the shipyards where after spring break up, passengers and freight destined for the north were transferred from rail to ship or barge. It is the only shipyard remaining in the province of Alberta and its significance in Alberta's history waits unveiling for the enjoyment of residents and tourists.
The concept and business plan strategy for Fort McMurray Marine Park reflects a tremendous opportunity for the Fort McMurray Historical Society and the Fort McMurray community to preserve, display and interpret a significant component of Northern Alberta's and Northern Canada's transportation history. The historic vessels that were integral to river transportation along the Athabasca and as far north as the Arctic Circle are now owned by the Society and will serve as the primary artifacts and feature icons of Fort McMurray Marine Park.
